A large price difference can signal efficiency, a different assumption, a missing requirement, a risk premium, or a genuine capability gap. The total alone does not tell you which.
The short version
Resolve scope and assumption differences before treating a quote gap as a price gap.
The manufacturing route
- Process and equipment choice, setup, programming, tooling, fixturing, cycle time, cavities, and secondary operations.
- Material form, availability, machinability or processing behavior, certification, and supplier minimums.
- Geometry, access, workholding, feature count, wall thickness, draft, undercuts, and assembly complexity.
The quality burden
- Tolerances and critical features.
- Inspection method, sampling plan, reports, traceability, calibration, and first-article evidence.
- Special finishes, cosmetic standards, regulated documentation, testing, and certification.
The commercial and delivery model
- Quantity and whether setup or tooling is amortized in the unit price.
- Schedule, expediting, material reservation, capacity, and overtime assumptions.
- Packaging, shipping, duties, taxes, payment terms, warranty, scrap, rework, and quote validity.
- Operations performed in-house versus subcontracted and the risk margin each vendor carries.
How to find the real difference
Issue a single revision-controlled RFQ package, require assumptions and exceptions, and normalize every cost category. Ask targeted questions about large gaps without sharing a competing vendor’s proprietary quote.
