Product development consultant vs. doing it yourself
Keep internal learning where it belongs, and bring in focused support when the next physical decision is costly or hard to unwind.
A product development consultant can fit when
- A mechanical, enclosure, prototype, or vendor decision is blocking the next build.
- The team needs a second set of hands to turn an unclear direction into CAD, a testable prototype, or a vendor-ready package.
- A focused external scope would let the internal team keep ownership while moving faster on a defined problem.
The other path can fit when
- The team has the time, relevant capability, and low-risk conditions to learn through its own first pass.
- The decision is reversible and does not yet warrant outside support.
Scope boundary
A consulting engagement does not transfer product ownership or replace the customer's technical review, vendor diligence, contracts, quality requirements, or acceptance decisions.
